Pedestrians and Road Traffic Accidents

Pedestrians and Road Traffic Accidents

Pedestrians and
Road Traffic Accidents

Pedestrians sadly make up a significant proportion of the overall number of deaths and injuries arising out of road traffic accidents each year. According to Department of Transport statistics, for example, in 2004, 671 of the 3221 deaths were pedestrians. That equates to 20.83% (i.e. just over a fifth of all deaths). Furthermore, of the 277,619 people who were injured in road traffic accidents that year, 34,210 were pedestrians.

Indeed, the very first recorded death in the United Kingdom caused by a road traffic accident was a pedestrian. It occurred on the 17th August 1896 when Bridget Driscoll was run over on the grounds at the Crystal Palace by a Roger-Benz motor car driven by Arthur James Edsall. The car was owned by the Anglo-French Motor Carriage Company which was using the vehicle to provide demonstration rides at the time. The vehicle was travelling at just 4mph when the tragic accident occurred (a speed later described by one witness as "a reckless pace, in fact, like a fire engine!"). Mrs Driscoll was walking to a fete with her daughter, May, in the area at the time of her premature demise. Percy Morrison, the Coroner, at the inquest into the death stated that he hoped that "such a thing would never happen again" and returned a verdict of accidental death.

The injuries sustained by pedestrians in accidents can inevitably be of a very serious nature. Head injuries are very common and the pedestrians memory and recollection of what happened can therefore be very hazy. Invariably, this brings about protracted and complex liability disputes which can often take a very long time to resolve. Given this, it is essential that if you have been a pedestrian who has been injured in a road traffic accident, that you obtain legal assistance as soon as possible, so as to ensure that you resolve your claim quickly and obtain the compensation you are entitled to. This is where we can help.

If you are a pedestrian who has been involved in a road traffic accident within the last 3 years, then please either complete the questionnaire opposite or phone us on 07919 561266.
