The overwhelming majority of road traffic accidents involve a car. According to the Department for Transport, for example, in 2004, of the 207,410 road traffic accidents that occurred, 146,755 involved a collision between two or more motor vehicles of which the majority were cars. That same year, 3221 people were killed on British roads in road traffic accidents, the majority of them having been killed in a car at the time (1671 people, making of 51.88% of the total). By 2007, there had been a small reduction in the number of deaths (2,946), but the majority of those killed had again been travelling in a car at the time.
